So I was talking to my dad the other day and he made a comment saying that it wouldn't hurt to post something to my blog. It was this comment that caused me to look and then realize that my last two posts did not actually post! So I am now combining those two into this post. Last Thursday was bonfire night here in Britain. My host parents said that it used to be a lot bigger when they were younger and now some families might have a bonfire and there a few fireworks displays put on in the area. I got to learn even more about the festivities the day before in school. Bonfire night is November the 5th. On this day in 1605 a group of men were about to follow through on the Gun Powder Plot. This plot consisted of blowing up Parliament along with the King. The man that was caught, Guy Fawkes, was sentenced to a very gruesome death. I find the history fascinating! |
Yesterday, was the 11th. For those of you back home that is Veterans day. Here, it is Armistice Day. At 11:00 am we had a minute of silence at the school and I got to learn all about the poppies. After the first World War Poppies grew in Flanders Field and become the symbol for Armistice day. The countries that celebrate this day all have a poppy, however, each country has its own version. In the U.S the poppy has a green center, while those sold in England, Wales, and Scotland have a black center. The poppy sold in England in Wales has two petals and a green leaf. Scotland's poppy has four petals and no leaf.
I love how much culture and country history is brought into the schools here. I am a geek about history and cannot get enough of it, maybe that's why I can't help but stare out the window when we go somewhere in the car. Every place I look there is a little piece of history, from the streets of stone houses to the casual castle. I just can't seem to get enough of it!
I have started to get to know the students at the school better and their little accents make me smile. The children are fantastic and very welcoming. Many are already asking if I can come back after Christmas. I am learning more and more about these students everyday and it only makes me want to be better for them. I want to be the best that I can be so that they can understand the material and be proud of themselves. These children deserve the world and I hope that by my being here I can give a little more of it to them.
