School Calendar
There is not a school calendar for the entire country, but each area selects a calendar. For the area that I will be visiting there are 3 terms; the Autumn, Winter, and Summer terms. The Autumn term starts in August and goes into late December. The Winter term begins in January, after the New Year, and ends in late March/early April. Finally, the Summer term begins mid-April and ends in late June.
Private/Public School
Scotland has a long history of universal public education. Many schools are public with only about 73 schools being private schools.
Curriculum
Children in Scotland can begin their education by attending nursery. This is not required but it suggested to help students acquaint themselves with the education process. Students start formal education at age 4 in Primary school. They spend 7 years in Primary school, beginning with P1. Once they complete P7 they go on to Secondary School. Secondary School goes from S1 to S6. These Secondary Schools are also knows as High Schools or Academies. At this point students may choose to go onto Post-Secondary Education or Uni. Scottish citizens do not pay tuition to go to higher education.
Scottish Schools use the Curriculum for Excellence which encourages a wider and more flexible range of courses and classes offered. There are 8 curricular areas: languages, mathematics, sciences, religious and moral education, social studies, technologies, health and wellbeing, and expressive arts.
