I have arrived in Scotland in one piece, plus two suitcases. I do not even know where to begin. I was able to look out on Edinburgh as I flew in. Seeing the castle and Arthurs Seat brought back a lot of really great memories and made me really excited to make more in this beautiful country. I met my host dad at the airport and we began our hour-long drive to the house. As we drove into the Boarders I got to see the beautiful landscape of Scotland. The hills were rolling and the sheep were plentiful. Right before we reached the house I was informed that the hills in the distance are actually English hills and we are only about 15 miles from the coast.
When we arrived at the house I met my host mom and brother. Mikey was in the kitchen baking with his friend (they are both very talented). They created a cake with an American football field, complete with 3D goal posts and ball, and an American flag, 13 strips and 50 stars. This family is amazing and has made me feel so comfortable.
I have now gotten down the basics of rugby as we watched the rugby World Cup this past weekend. Don’t ask me for exact rules because I will not have the answer, but I know that they are playing an extremely dangerous sport with no pads…it’s great!
On Sunday we went for a walk to Duns Castle. The castle is private but the grounds surrounding it are public. Sheep fields and a lake surround the castle. As my host mom said, “It seems like something out of Pride and Prejudice” needless to say I am living inside a dream world.
I have only had two days in the school so far but I am learning so much. I am learning words for school supplies and a new way to write. I cannot wait to learn even more about my class and the schools in Scotland.
